The Bra-ed Wire Fence! Summer fund raiser at Highway Farm. Supporting………. Bras for Breakthrough and Bras for Malawi.
There was a lot of interest and quick take-up from
a variety of local charities…. Bras in Malawi are very hard to come by! Lots of
second hand clothing is brought over from Europe and sold on in bundles to
traders who sell them at the ‘bend-down’ markets. However underwear is not so
common as people tend not to donate second hand underwear!
The following charities have
benefitted from the first batch of bras from Dorset to Malawi!
The Joshua Trust – Orphan and Community Care in rural
communities around Blantyre, they will be distributed to their women care
workers and teachers. http://www.joshuainmalawi.org.uk/
The Samaritans Trust – Working with street children in Blantyre,
they will be for the older girls and volunteer helpers. http://samaritantrust.africa-online.net/Welcome.html
SAWEG (part of the German Development
Cooperation) – a network of
about 30 women affected by HIV/Aids based in Salima.
Forum for the Development of Youth with Disability (FDYD) –
An organisation working with young people with
disabilities in Namiyangu area, they will be given to the older girls and mothers in the group.
We now have a waiting list for more including Ubwino wa
Amayi, a charity working with women and girls in rural Zomba and also
Nanzikambe Arts, a drama and art group based in Blantyre. I am hoping to have
enough luggage allowance to bring more out in October.
Love Lucy xxPS. Bras for Breakthrough update.....BALANCE TO DATE............ £3970.
My whacky idea has raised nearly £4000.
The £1000 raised at our Garden Cafe is for
Cancer Research UK, £500 to Malawi and the rest of the money
£2500 will go to Breakthrough. Well done and thank so much to everyone. Pauline xx
